The End of Furlough
Fridays for 2010-2011
May 25, 2010 - Governor Lingle invites HSPTSA
President Valerie Sonoda, Principles, Teachers and
Legislators to a press conference and announces the end
of Furlough Fridays.
Four major elements announced:
1. 57.2 million from the HI Hurricane Fund for non-charted
public schools
2. 2.2 million from the American and Rebuilding Act ('aka'
stimulus) for public charted schools
3. 10 million line of credit (non-salaried) offered by First
Hawaiian Bank and Bank of Hawaii if needed by the
DOE
4. Teacher Union (HSTA) agrees to convert 6 waiver days
to instructional days
PTSA Parents In Action
Melanie Bailey and Kathy Bryant of Aikahi Elementary
School PTSA are two Moms who helped advocate for
HB2486 authored by Wil Schroehner a business owner in
Hawaii Kai and community member of the Kaiser High
School Community Council who worked with
Representative Lyla Berg that introduced the bill.
May 21, 2010 meeting with
Governor Lingle
HSPTSA President Valerie Sonoda along with Teachers,
Principals and community leaders were invited to meet
with Governor Lingle to discuss three important bills
passed by the legislature and currently on her desk.
- Senate Bill 2124 $67 million appropriation out of the
HI Hurrican Relief Fund to restore instructional days
for 2010-2011
- HB2486 - Mandatory 180 days and increased
"Student Instructional Hours"
- HB2377 - Appointed BOE members
Governor Lingle understood the importance of making a
decision by the last day of school, May 26, 2010. There
was mutual agreement by all, including teachers present at
the meeting regarding mandatory school days and
increased instructional hours.
